Area Summary
Katanga Canyon is themed to be an African settlement deep within Alton Towers' grounds. The two rides in the area, the Congo River Rapids and Runaway Mine Train, fit in perfectly and in many peoples opinion it is the best themed area of the park. With a stunning lake, rocky surroundings and a beautiful atmosphere created by ambient music playing from behind the bushes - Katanga Canyon does what a theme park should, it takes you away from the real world.

Area History
Before 1992, the Katanga Canyon area was known as Aqua Land and was aptly home to the Congo River Rapids and the Log Flume. In 1992, when Aqua Land was split into the many different areas that we see today, such as Gloomy Wood and Merrie England (now named Mutiny Bay), Katanga Canyon was formed. The Runaway Mine Train was installed and the Congo River Rapids were given a once over. A new shop named the Katanga Cargo Company Shop was also put in to place.

The only things that have changed since the areas formation in 1992, are the food outlets. Back when the area was first created there were two choices of cuisine. The first choice was the Explorers Club which was a family restaurant, this was adjacent to the Katanga Cookhouse which served fast food in the area. In 1993 the restaurant was given a slight name change to the Explorer Restaurant and in 1994 the two outlets merged. As the 'Alton Eats' branding for all of the parks food outlets was introduced it was again renamed. The Alton Eats name survived until the KFC & Pizza Hut we see today took over in 1998.

In 2006 a new pay per play golf attraction was installed adjacent to the High Striker attraction.
